Measure

Turnover

Definition

The share of a fund's portfolio traded over a year.

How to read it

It is the usual proxy for how much hidden trading cost and taxable distribution a fund generates.

What it does not tell you

It counts volume, not cost. Turnover in large, liquid names is cheap; the same figure in small caps or emerging markets is not. It also ignores the ETF creation-redemption mechanism, which lets a fund move holdings without realising gains.
